What’s Behind Switzerland’s New Red License Plates Coming This March

The Swiss must really love to cycle because the government has just introduced a special new license plate just for bike racks. The new red and black plate doesn’t just look unique, it also saves time.

The plate is being offered to people who have a bike rack that could block the police’s view of a vehicle’s license plate. This includes commonly installed racks that hook up via the hitch.

Although the plate isn’t necessary, it’s being offered as a time-saver, since drivers who own those accessories could also remove their rear plate and screw it into the bike rack. If they don’t feel like breaking out the screwdriver every time they want to go mountain biking, drivers can opt for the red plate instead.

The Swiss government has alerted other European countries, including France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Estonia, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, and the U.K. of the plates, making international bike trips a little bit easier.

Swiss residents interested in getting one of the red plates can place an order as of March 1, 2022. People planning a trip will have to plan ahead, though, since the plates are made to order. That means that, unlike regular license plates, customers won’t be able to just pick them up at their local licensing authority. The first plates will be mailed out at the end of March at the earliest.
