Mercedes’ Twin-Turbo V8 Is Making A Comeback In America, But Some Models Still Haven’t Returned

Last year, Mercedes discontinued a number of V8-powered models in America due to a variety of factors including supply chain issues.

A handful of them have now returned as the company quietly released updated Quick Reference Guides on January 31st. These confirmed the GLE 580 4MATIC and GLS 580 4MATIC are once again available and pricing starts at $80,900 and $101,250 respectively.

Both models feature a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 that produces 483 hp (360 kW / 490 PS) and 516 lb-ft (699 Nm) of torque. They’re accompanied by an Integrated Starter Generator, which can contribute an additional 21 hp (16 kW / 21 PS) and 184 lb-ft (249 Nm) of torque.

This setup enables the GLE 580 4MATIC to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in approximately 4.9 seconds, while the GLS 580 4MATIC can accomplish the same task in about 5.2 seconds. While the GLE is faster to 60 mph (96 km/h), both models have an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph (209 km/h).

Besides those two crossovers, Car & Driver is reporting the company is reopening orders for the G550, G63, GLE63, and the Mercedes-Maybach GLS600. However, all discontinued models haven’t made a return as the E63, GLS63, and GT63 4-Door are still missing in action.

While it’s sad to see a handful of models are still missing from the lineup, a majority of them have returned and this is good news for both consumers and the company as these are high-end variants, which are likely highly profitable.
