Honda Continues To Tease The 2023 Civic Type R, Prototype Will Make U.S. Debut In July

The teaser campaign for the 2023 Honda Civic Type R continues as the automaker has confirmed a prototype will make its U.S. debut during the Honda Indy 200 in July.

Unfortunately, there won’t be much to see as Honda said the model will be wearing “special camouflage designed exclusively for [the] Type R.” On the bright side, the prototype will make several hot laps and serve as the lead vehicle at the start of the race on July 3rd.

Honda didn’t say much else about the Civic Type R, but prototypes have been undergoing testing for nearly two years and the model made its public debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January. The company has been keeping details under wraps, but photos have shown the car will be equipped with a unique grille and a sportier front bumper that features vertical air curtains. The model will also have front fender vents, pronounced side skirts, and a high-performance braking system with red calipers. Other highlights will include a prominent rear wing and a center-mounted triple exhaust.

Interior changes will be more modest, but spy photos have shown the Civic Type R will have a microfiber sport steering wheel, red seat belts, and heavily bolstered sport seats. They’ll be joined by a six-speed manual transmission with a metal knob.

The biggest mystery remains the engine, but we can expect an upgraded version of the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that powered its predecessor. It produced 306 hp (228 kW / 310 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque, but we can expect those numbers to climb as Honda has already said the upcoming model is the “best performing Civic Type R ever.”
